soapbark

Andean lathering plant

Soapbark is a tree native to Chile whose bark contains saponins—compounds that produce a lather when mixed with water.

The bark has been used as a natural soap and shampoo, and its extracts appear in some commercial products as foaming agents.

Also called quillaja or quillay.
