sluicebox
Miner's water channel
A sluicebox is a long, narrow trough used in mining to separate gold or other heavy minerals from gravel and sand.
Water flows through the box, washing lighter material away while riffles along the bottom trap heavier particles.
The device dates to the California Gold Rush and remains used by small-scale prospectors: We set up the sluicebox in the creek and ran gravel through it all afternoon.
