hand picking
Choosing by hand
Hand picking is selecting individual items by hand rather than by machine or in bulk.
The term applies literally to harvesting fruit or removing defects from a production line, and figuratively to choosing with special care: She hand-picked her replacement.
The implication is deliberate, personal selection—often suggesting favoritism or unusual attention to quality.
