skidplate

Vehicle underbody shield

A skidplate is a protective metal or plastic panel mounted underneath a vehicle to shield the undercarriage from damage when driving over rough terrain, rocks, or debris.

Off-road vehicles, trucks, and SUVs commonly have skidplates covering vulnerable components like the oil pan, transmission, and fuel tank.

The skidplate took a beating on the rocky trail but kept everything underneath intact.

Also spelled as two words: skid plate.
