silkmoth

Cocoon-spinning lepidopteran

A silkmoth is any moth whose caterpillar spins silk, especially the domesticated species *Bombyx mori*, which has been bred for thousands of years to produce commercial silk.

The adult moths are pale, heavy-bodied, and flightless—so thoroughly domesticated they cannot survive without human care.

The silkmoths emerged from their cocoons but never flew.
