signal-caller

Offensive field general

A signal-caller is someone who directs action by giving signals or commands.

In American football, it's the quarterback—the player who calls plays and initiates each down: The team's veteran signal-caller threw three touchdowns.

The term extends to anyone who makes key decisions or coordinates group activity: She's the signal-caller for the entire marketing division.
