word blindness

Can't decode text

Word blindness is an older term for the inability to recognize or understand written words despite normal vision and intelligence.

The condition, now usually called dyslexia or alexia, prevents the brain from processing written language normally.

Someone with word blindness may see letters clearly but struggle to decode them into meaning: The doctor diagnosed his reading difficulties as word blindness.
