Shovelheads are freshwater catfish with broad, flattened heads, especially the flathead catfish native to North American rivers.
The term also refers to Harley-Davidson motorcycles produced from 1966 to 1984, named for the shovel-shaped rocker covers on their V-twin engines: He restored a '72 shovelhead.
In casual speech, shovelhead can be an insult meaning a stupid person.
