hardtail

Stiff rear bike

A hardtail is a bicycle with front suspension but no rear suspension—the back triangle of the frame is rigid.

Mountain bikers choose hardtails for efficiency on smoother trails and lower maintenance: I ride a hardtail for cross-country.

The term also applies to motorcycles with rigid rear frames, especially classic choppers built without rear shock absorbers.
