short-sell

Borrow, sell, rebuy lower

Short-sell is a trading strategy where you sell something you don't own, betting its price will fall.

In finance, you borrow shares, sell them at today's price, then buy them back later at a lower price to return to the lender—pocketing the difference: Hedge funds short-sold the stock before earnings.

The risk is unlimited if prices rise instead.

Figuratively, to short-sell something is to undervalue or underestimate it: Don't short-sell yourself in the interview.
