shell holes

Artillery impact cavities

Shell holes are craters left in the ground by exploding artillery shells or bombs.

The term belongs primarily to military contexts, especially descriptions of World War I battlefields, where bombardment churned landscapes into moonscapes of overlapping pits: Soldiers took cover in shell holes across no man's land.

The holes often filled with water and mud, becoming deadly traps.
