sharper

More keen, less dull

A sharper is a swindler or cheat, especially one who fleeces victims at cards or gambling.

The term was common in the 18th and 19th centuries: The riverboat was full of sharpers looking for easy marks.

Now somewhat old-fashioned, it survives mainly in historical fiction and period pieces.
