shanty towns
Improvised housing areas
Shanty towns are makeshift settlements of improvised dwellings, typically on the outskirts of cities in developing countries.
The structures are built from scrap materials—corrugated metal, plywood, tarps—by people who lack access to formal housing.
Shanty towns usually have no running water, sewage systems, or legal electricity.
They go by many names: favelas in Brazil, slums, squatter camps.
The hillsides were covered with shanty towns.
