bread lines
Food distribution queues
Bread lines are queues of people waiting to receive free food, especially bread, from charitable organizations or government relief programs.
The term evokes the Great Depression, when unemployment left millions dependent on such handouts: My grandfather remembered standing in bread lines as a boy.
The image remains shorthand for economic desperation and widespread poverty.
