service rifle
Soldier's issued weapon
A service rifle is the standard-issue rifle adopted by a military for its infantry.
The term distinguishes the official weapon from specialized firearms like sniper rifles or submachine guns.
Service rifles have evolved from bolt-action designs through semi-automatic to selective-fire assault rifles: The M16 became the U.S. service rifle in the 1960s.
