semimonocoque
Partial shell construction
Semimonocoque describes an aircraft or vehicle structure where the outer skin shares stress loads with an internal framework of ribs and stringers.
Unlike a true monocoque, which relies entirely on the skin for strength, a semimonocoque uses both skin and skeleton: Most modern airliners use semimonocoque fuselage construction.
The design offers strength without excessive weight.
