self-name
What you're called
A self-name is what a person or group calls themselves, as distinct from names imposed by outsiders.
Indigenous peoples often have self-names different from colonial designations: the Diné rather than Navajo, the Romani rather than Gypsies.
The term appears in discussions of identity and the politics of naming.
To self-name is to choose one's own designation.
