self-murder

Ending one's life

Self-murder is an old-fashioned or literary term for suicide—the act of killing oneself.

The word emphasizes the violence of the act and historically carried moral or legal weight, since both murder and suicide were crimes: In Elizabethan England, self-murder meant forfeiture of one's estate.

Now largely replaced by suicide in ordinary speech.
