self-exiled
Left by choice
Self-exiled describes someone who has voluntarily left their homeland or community, typically to escape political persecution, social conflict, or personal circumstances.
Unlike forced exile, self-exile is a choice—though often a constrained one: The self-exiled writer continued publishing from abroad.
The term carries notes of both agency and loss.
