self-containment

Needing nothing external

Self-containment is the quality of being complete in oneself, needing nothing external.

A person with self-containment manages their emotions independently and doesn't rely on others for validation: His quiet self-containment made him difficult to read.

The term applies equally to systems or units that operate without outside resources: the self-containment of the spacecraft's life support.
