sea smoke

Cold air vapor

Sea smoke is fog that forms when cold air moves over warmer water, creating wisps of vapor that rise from the surface like steam from a hot bath.

The effect is most dramatic in arctic regions or during winter cold snaps: Sea smoke rolled across the harbor as temperatures plunged below zero.

Also called steam fog or arctic sea smoke.
