valley fog

Low-lying morning haze

Valley fog forms when cold, dense air settles into low-lying terrain and cools to the point where moisture condenses.

The surrounding hills or mountains trap the fog, which can persist for days in calm conditions.

It's common in autumn and winter mornings: The valley fog didn't lift until noon.

Also called tule fog in California's Central Valley.
