sanitoria

Rest cure institutions

Sanitoria is a plural of sanatorium—a facility for treating chronic illness, especially tuberculosis.

In the early twentieth century, sanitoria dotted mountain regions and dry climates where fresh air was thought therapeutic: The sanitoria of the American Southwest drew thousands of tuberculosis patients.

The word has faded with the diseases it treated.

Also spelled sanatoria.
