sandspurs
Coastal grass thorns
Sandspurs are the spiny seed pods of certain grasses that grow in sandy coastal areas, notorious for their sharp, barbed spines that pierce bare feet and embed painfully in skin: I stepped on a sandspur walking to the beach.
Also called sandburs or grass burrs.
The plants spread aggressively in lawns and dunes throughout the southern United States.
