salty dog

Grapefruit vodka cocktail

A salty dog is a cocktail of vodka or gin with grapefruit juice, served in a glass rimmed with salt—distinguishing it from a greyhound, which skips the salt.

The name plays on the older sense of salty dog: a weathered, experienced sailor.

He's been at sea forty years—a real salty dog.
