saltcellars
Seasoning vessels, paired
Saltcellars are small containers for holding salt at the table.
Before salt shakers became common in the late nineteenth century, diners would take pinches of salt from open saltcellars, sometimes using tiny spoons.
The word combines salt with cellar in its older sense of a container or receptacle, not an underground room.
Antique saltcellars are now collectibles.
