Sheffield plate
Copper-core tableware
Sheffield plate is a metal layered with silver through fusion rather than electroplating, originally produced in Sheffield, England from the mid-18th century.
A copper core was bonded with thin sheets of silver, creating affordable silverware that mimicked solid silver.
The term now distinguishes this older technique from later electroplated silver: Is this sterling or Sheffield plate?
