saltboxes

New England dwellings

Saltboxes is the plural of saltbox, a style of wooden house common in colonial New England.

The distinctive feature is an asymmetrical roofline—two stories in front sloping down to one story in back, said to resemble the hinged-lid boxes once used to store salt.

The village green was lined with white saltboxes.
