safety car
Caution period leader
A safety car is a vehicle that leads competitors during a caution period in motorsport, particularly Formula One.
When track conditions become dangerous—due to crashes, debris, or weather—the safety car enters the circuit and slows the field to a controlled pace while maintaining race order: The safety car came out after the collision on turn three.
Racing resumes when conditions clear and the safety car withdraws.
