bareroot
No pot, no soil
Bareroot describes plants sold with their roots exposed rather than enclosed in soil or a container.
Nurseries dig up dormant trees, shrubs, and perennials, shake off the soil, and ship them lightweight and inexpensive: bareroot roses, bareroot fruit trees.
They must be planted promptly before roots dry out.
The method works best during the dormant season.
