bare-root
Shipped without soil
Bare-root describes plants sold with their roots exposed rather than in soil or a container.
Nurseries dig up dormant trees, shrubs, and perennials, shake off the soil, and ship them this way—lighter, cheaper, and easier to handle than potted stock.
Bare-root plants must be planted promptly before roots dry out: We ordered bare-root roses for the garden.
