rootballs
Soil-wrapped root masses
Rootballs are the compact masses of roots and soil that form around a plant's base, held together by the root system.
When transplanting trees or shrubs, the rootball is dug up intact to minimize shock: Handle the rootball carefully when moving the sapling.
Nursery plants are often sold with their rootballs wrapped in burlap.
