rolling starts
Non-stationary race beginnings
A rolling start is beginning a race or timed event while already in motion, rather than from a stationary position.
In auto racing, cars follow a pace vehicle until the flag drops: NASCAR uses rolling starts instead of standing starts.
The concept extends to any activity where you build momentum before the official beginning: We took a rolling start on the project, doing prep work before the contract was signed.
