forward progress
Gaining ground steadily
Forward progress is advancement toward a goal or destination, even if minimal.
The term appears most often in American football, where it marks the furthest point a ball carrier reaches before being stopped—the spot from which the next play begins regardless of where the tackle ends.
More broadly, any movement in the right direction counts as forward progress: We're making forward progress on the project, even if it's slow.
