required reading
Assigned course material
Required reading refers to books, articles, or other texts that students must read as part of a course or curriculum.
The term extends beyond academia to describe any work considered essential for understanding a particular subject, profession, or cultural moment: That exposé became required reading for anyone following the scandal.
Something dismissed as "not required reading" is being labeled optional or skippable.
