remagnetization

Restoring magnetic polarity

Remagnetization is the process of restoring or renewing magnetic properties in a material that has lost its magnetism.

Permanent magnets can weaken over time from heat, physical shock, or opposing magnetic fields, requiring remagnetization to restore their strength.

The term also applies in geology and physics to rocks or materials acquiring new magnetic orientations: The remagnetization of these sediments complicates paleomagnetic dating.
