religious courts

Ecclesiastical judicial bodies

Religious courts are judicial bodies that apply religious law to resolve disputes, typically matters of marriage, divorce, inheritance, and personal status.

In some countries, religious courts operate alongside civil courts with jurisdiction over adherents of particular faiths: The case was heard in a sharia court.

In others, they function as private arbitration panels whose rulings depend on voluntary submission by the parties.

Religious courts may be Jewish (beth din), Islamic (sharia courts), Christian (ecclesiastical courts), or of other traditions.
