refund scam
Fake return scheme
A refund scam is a fraud where someone posing as tech support or a company representative claims to process a refund, then "accidentally" transfers too much money—actually manipulating the victim's screen to show a fake balance—and pressures the victim to return the "overpayment" via gift cards or wire transfer.
The scammer often targets elderly people and gains remote access to their computer: My grandmother almost lost her savings to a refund scam.
