postal theft
Stealing delivered correspondence
Postal theft is the stealing of mail—letters, packages, or other items—from mailboxes, postal facilities, or delivery vehicles.
The term covers theft by outsiders who raid mailboxes as well as theft by postal workers who pilfer contents.
In most countries, postal theft is a federal crime carrying harsher penalties than ordinary theft: He was charged with postal theft after stealing checks from neighborhood mailboxes.
