rederiving

Working out anew

Rederiving is the act of deriving something again—working out a proof, formula, or conclusion from first principles rather than looking it up or relying on memory.

Common in mathematics and physics: I forgot the equation, so I spent ten minutes rederiving it.

The process often deepens understanding more than simply recalling the result.
