recarve

Shape stone anew

To recarve is to carve again—reshaping something already carved, whether to correct, refine, or repurpose it.

A sculptor might recarve a figure's features after the stone cracked, or a woodworker recarve decorative molding damaged by water.

The word applies literally to physical carving and figuratively to any deliberate reshaping: The treaty recarved the borders of Eastern Europe.
