reader-response

Meaning through reception

Reader-response is a school of literary criticism that emphasizes the reader's role in creating meaning.

Rather than treating a text as having fixed meaning determined by the author, reader-response theory holds that meaning emerges from the interaction between text and reader: Reader-response critics argue that no two readings of a poem are identical.
