literary forms
Prose and poetry
Literary forms are the established structures and conventions through which writing is organized—novels, sonnets, essays, plays, short stories, epics.
The term encompasses both broad categories (poetry, prose, drama) and specific formats within them (haiku, limerick, villanelle).
A writer working in a literary form inherits its constraints and possibilities: She experimented with literary forms, blending memoir and fiction.
