readback

Confirming by repeating

Readback is the practice of repeating information back to confirm accuracy.

In aviation, pilots read back instructions from air traffic control to verify they heard correctly: Runway 27 left, cleared for takeoff—readback correct.

The practice appears in any high-stakes communication where errors could be costly—medical settings, military operations, or technical procedures.

In computing, readback refers to retrieving data that was previously written to verify storage integrity.
