rambutans

Spiny tropical fruits

Rambutans are tropical fruits native to Southeast Asia, related to lychees and longans.

The golf-ball-sized fruit has a red or yellow skin covered in soft, hair-like spines—the name comes from a Malay word for hair.

Inside, translucent white flesh surrounds a single seed: We split open the rambutans and ate them on the beach.
