rain fly
Shelter's outer layer
A rain fly is the outer waterproof layer of a tent, stretched over the main canopy to shed rain and provide additional weather protection.
It typically attaches to the tent's poles or stakes and creates an air gap between itself and the inner tent fabric: We forgot to secure the rain fly and woke up soaked.
