rag trade

Clothing business, informally

The rag trade is the clothing industry, especially the manufacturing and selling of garments.

The term is informal and slightly dismissive, evoking the bustle of garment districts and wholesale fashion: Her family made their money in the rag trade.

Also called the schmatte business, from the Yiddish for rag.
