SSL certificate
Website identity proof
An SSL certificate is a digital credential that authenticates a website's identity and enables encrypted connections between web servers and browsers.
When a site has one, browsers display a padlock icon and use HTTPS rather than HTTP.
The name comes from Secure Sockets Layer, the original protocol, though modern certificates actually use its successor, TLS.
The browser warned that the site's SSL certificate had expired.
