public displays
Spectacles for everyone
Public displays are demonstrations or exhibitions intended for general observation.
The phrase often appears in public displays of affection—kissing, hand-holding, or other intimate behavior in view of others.
Public displays can also be deliberate performances: a public display of grief, a public display of wealth.
The term sometimes carries judgment—that something private is being made inappropriately visible.
