prospection

Imagining what's ahead

Prospection is the act of looking forward in time—imagining, anticipating, or planning for future events.

Psychologists use the term for the mental process of simulating possible futures: Much of human thought involves prospection rather than memory.

The word also appears in mining contexts as a variant of prospecting—searching for mineral deposits.
